The first time I had heard about BBLC was when I was a boy in the Boys’ Brigade. My Officer was speaking about the various countries that the BB was in, and he highlighted how BBLC was making an impact in the community around them by educating children. Ever since then, it has been on my bucket list to at least visit BBLC. When the opportunity through Project Caritas X came around, I immediately applied for it.
The two weeks spent at BBLC was one of the most impactful experiences that I have ever had. Even though it might have been difficult to wake up every morning after a warm night, knowing that I would be greeted by the warm smiles and enthusiastic voices of the students gave me the strength and energy to look forward to the day. Over the two weeks, I have seen the students’ strive to learn more, and put in the hard work necessary to achieve that. Though many have grown up in circumstances that has limited the resources that they have, they have big dreams and aspirations that are not limited at all. Their level of persistence is absolutely inspirational. Just as the students have learnt from us, I have also learnt much from them. The time spent at BBLC has been an amazing time, and I am more than willing to support them and return again!
The experience I had volunteering at BBLC was very meaningful for me. Although it was definitely not easy, from the late nights to the early mornings, I would say it was more than worth it when I see the smiles of the children during our interactions with them in class. The children are a very precious bunch and they are very respectful and super willing to learn. Seeing them engage with us teachers and slowly but surely warm up to us has been extremely fulfilling, which gives me the confidence to continue encouraging and supporting them. We should all strive to make the world a better place for the children here at BBLC. Overall, I would say that it was an experience of a lifetime and I would not trade it for anything else.
The experience I had volunteering at BBLC was life-changing for me in so many ways. From seeing people as individuals instead of categories, to realising that even the smallest words or actions could shape how a child sees themselves, I’ve absolutely cherished every memory and experience that I’ve had here. Despite growing up with so little, the children here always seemed happy and contented, and it’s honestly such a precious and heartwarming sight to see.
Through all the classes I taught, I came to understand that showing up regularly mattered far more than trying to be the perfect teacher. Over time, the children started to open up to me, got more comfortable, and by the end of the two weeks, they were already giving me the warmest and most embracing hugs after every lesson. I would do anything to experience these moments again, and I would be more than happy to return in the future!
